Hello everyone, this is Mido! Today, I'm going to share our experience visiting "Bao Ding BBQ" in Chinatown, a restaurant my wife's friend recommended. We usually go to Dong Fang Mei Shi, but this place is supposedly a local favorite and even tastier, so I was really excited. 🤔 It might be similar, but I just had to find out! Shall we go and see which one it is among the many restaurants in Chinatown? 😊
Key Summary
📌 Finding Bao Ding BBQ, A Hidden Gem in Chinatown
We arrived in Chinatown and started looking for the restaurant my wife's friend recommended. I was worried it might be hard to find among so many eateries, but thanks to the hint that it was near Tang Ren Jia Dessert, we found it quickly! Seeing "Bao Ding BBQ" written on the sign confirmed we had arrived. It looked ordinary from the outside, but knowing it was a local favorite made me even more excited! 😊
📝 Our Order & Comparison with Dong Fang Mei Shi! 📊
We sat down and placed our order. We ordered pretty much the same dishes we usually get at Dong Fang Mei Shi. I wondered how much better the taste would be! To be honest, I couldn't quite remember the exact prices from Dong Fang Mei Shi, so I thought I'd compare them later. I had a feeling the prices would be similar. 😋
According to the YouTube script, the menu is almost identical to Dong Fang Mei Shi. First-time visitors can choose familiar dishes!
✨ Beyond Expectations! The Fried Eggplant is a True Gem!
We were starving, and finally, the food arrived, filling the table! The first dish that caught my eye was the fried eggplant. My husband really dislikes eggplant, but he raved about how delicious this fried eggplant was! When I tried it myself, it was truly amazing. It was incredibly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, almost like eating a snack. There was none of that typical soggy eggplant texture, which was surprising! Even if you don't like eggplant, you absolutely have to try this! The mild spiciness from the chili added to its deliciousness, making it even more appealing! 🤤
The Guobaorou (sweet and sour pork) was also excellent. It wasn't overly salty and had a slightly different flavor compared to Dong Fang Mei Shi. At first, it didn't have the same intense impression as Dong Fang Mei Shi, but the more I ate, the more I fell in love with its unique charm. What's more, the portion of Guobaorou here was significantly larger, almost double that of Dong Fang Mei Shi, allowing us to enjoy it very generously! 😲
The fried eggplant was so crispy and snack-like, even those who dislike eggplant would enjoy it. The added spicy kick made it even more appealing.
🍜 The Ultimate Generosity! Amazed by the Sheer Quantity
The amount of food was so substantial that it made us wonder if we had ordered too much. Especially the Guobaorou, which seemed to be almost double the portion of Dong Fang Mei Shi. The stir-fried pork with chili didn't have the strong smoky flavor of Dong Fang Mei Shi, but as I mentioned, it offered a very generous portion. The fried rice was a simple, standard egg fried rice, but it certainly hit the spot. Overall, the sheer quantity of food at this restaurant was incredibly impressive. I'd say it's about 1.5 to 2 times the portion size of Dong Fang Mei Shi. 😲
The portions are very large, so we recommend ordering less than usual or visiting with a group! Don't worry, leftover food can be packed.
💰 Honest Pricing Review! How's the Value?
After a satisfying meal, it was time to settle the bill! Here are the items we ordered and their prices:
Menu Item | Price | Notes |
---|---|---|
Fried Rice | $6 | Standard egg fried rice |
Guobaorou (Estimated) | $14.8 | Approx. double the portion of Dong Fang Mei Shi |
Stir-fried Pork with Chili (Estimated) | $14.8 | Generous portion |
Fried Eggplant | $8.8 | Crispy, spicy, highly recommended! |
Tsingtao Beer | $8 |
The total cost was $52.40, and with 9% GST ($4.70) added, the final bill came to $57.15. The prices are quite similar to Dong Fang Mei Shi, but considering the much larger portions, I'd say it offers better value for money! 🤩
🌟 Final Review: Comparison with Dong Fang Mei Shi & Recommendation Status
Personally, I found the Guobaorou a bit sweeter than Dong Fang Mei Shi, but my wife said it was less sweet. Since we didn't do a direct comparison, it's hard to say definitively. However, the overall taste was quite similar to Dong Fang Mei Shi. The stir-fried pork with chili didn't have the smoky flavor of Dong Fang Mei Shi, but as I mentioned, its main advantage was the incredibly generous portion. ✨
The most memorable dish was definitely the fried eggplant. Even though I usually dislike eggplant, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Its crispy texture and spicy kick made it truly exceptional! 🤩 Many Koreans visiting Singapore go to Dong Fang Mei Shi, but I'd definitely recommend giving Bao Ding BBQ a try too. It seems to accommodate large groups, and since it's not as well-known yet, you can enjoy your meal more peacefully. I believe it will become more popular in the future!
Bao Ding BBQ offers similar taste to Dong Fang Mei Shi but with significantly larger portions. We highly recommend trying the fried eggplant!
Conclusion: Key Takeaways 📝
How was our visit to Bao Ding BBQ today? As a local-recommended spot, it certainly lived up to our expectations with its generous portions and delicious fried eggplant. If you ever find yourself in Chinatown, be sure to give it a try! 😊
